Welcome to the official website of the 2018 Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank!

The Korean government and the African Development Bank Group will jointly host the 2018 Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank in Busan, Republic of Korea, on May 21-25, 2018.

We will have various participants in this event of significance including African Heads of State, Delegations of 80 member countries, and high-profile business leaders, academics and journalists home and abroad.

The theme of this year’s Annual Meetings would be “Accelerating Africa’s Industrialization.”

Over the past two decades, Africa has demonstrated its potential by achieving a dramatic growth. And now the region is emerging as the next economic growth engine of the world.

Korea is regarded as a good example of remarkable economic development. Thanks to industrialization, the country could rapidly transform itself from a least developed country to one of the advanced countries in the world.
To make the growth trajectory of the two regions more robust and sustainable, constant efforts to upgrade industry structure and increase productivity are fundamentally required.

Moreover, we now have reached a critical juncture in the midst of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. In order to take this unstoppable trend of the time as a new growth opportunity, we have to discover a more innovative strategy and think out of the box rather than dwelling in the past.

And this is not just an issue of Korea and Africa, but a challenge that the global community faces.

To that end, I am convinced that this year’s Annual Meetings will give member countries and participants an opportunity to share their development experience and identify ways to make a better future.

I also hope this occasion will foster increased cooperation between Korea and Africa.

The Korean government is fully aware of the significance of the upcoming Annual Meetings and thus committed to spare no effort to make the event a success.

This year’s Annual Meetings will feature not only official sessions for Delegations but also a variety of side events.

Seminars will take place for discussing industrialization for sustainable development, industry diversification and role of the public and private sector in financing infrastructure. There would also be business sessions such as Africa Project Forum, Presentations by Korean ICT and infrastructure companies, and One-on-one Business Meetings. These events will become more meaningful with your presence.

I sincerely look forward to welcoming you to the 2018 Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank in Busan, of which the natural environment is a harmonious relationship of mountain, river, and sea.

Chairperson of the Boards of Governors,
Deputy Prime Minister & Minister of Strategy and Finance

Kim Dong Yeon

On behalf of the Board of Governors of the African Development Bank, I would like to warmly welcome you in advance to our Annual Meetings in Busan, Korea, from May 21 to 25. This year, we are expecting close to 3000 Delegates and participants from all around the world. To attend our meetings, a number of critically important dialogues and side events will also be held.

Our theme this year is “Accelerating Africa’s Industrialization.” And there is a reason for this. “Industrializing Africa” is one of the key pillars of the Bank’s high 5 agenda and a critically important platform for transforming the continent through value-addition, the creation of job opportunities, growing our economies, and for ensuring that economic and social development is equitable and sustainable.

Africa has had a long history of economic and technological cooperation with Korea. Our Annual Meetings provide yet another opportunity to cement this relationship even further during our dialogues, side events, bi-laterals, and the equally important KOAFEC event of which we are so proud to be associated with Korea. I’d also like to most sincerely thank President MOON Jae-in for warmly welcoming our Governors and Delegates and for helping to make our 2018 Annual Meetings a huge success. Let me use this opportunity to also express our appreciation to the Mayor of the Metropolitan City of Busan, Byeong-soo SUH, for graciously hosting us and for his excellent collaboration and support. I look forward to seeing you in Busan. Long Live Africa, Long Live Korea, and Long Live the historic and strong ties between Africa and Korea.
